Drake Bay is one of the largest, most biologically diverse section of lowland rainforest in Central America.

This remote village is not a destination for everyone and Osa Peninsula is quite remote, comprised of only small towns and villages spread out among bountiful rainforest and mangroves. It is located next to Corcovado National Park, hailed as one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. With jungle full of exotic wildlife and warm ocean waters that are a playground for marine life, it’s hard not to feel at peace and connected to nature.

In this special place on Earth is where we will design a new Sandglass hospitality concept.

The hotel will consist of 20 bungalows, a wellness area, a restaurant, an infinity pool and nature trails that blend in the rainforest. A journey of shapes and geometries, natural and man-made on the way up to the site. A design that recalls the feeling of leaves falling from tree branches, moved by the wind.

Iconic green organic curved roofs provide habitats for birds, insects, and small mammals. We celebrate curves and waves in nature while these green feature roofs improve air quality, regulate temperature, and mitigate heat island effect.

The structures are elevated above the ground on stilts or pillars, minimizing its footprint and allowing for the unimpeded flow of wildlife and vegetation beneath it. Guests are inmersed in the rainforest experience, fully connected with nature and the sense of place.

Sandglass, the hospitality management brand operating the hotel offers a haven for intrepid travelers seeking to escape the well-trodden tourist routes and immerse themselves in remote, exotic destinations. Nestled in rugged landscapes and far-flung corners of the world, Sandglass properties beckon explorers with a promise of authentic experiences and unparalleled adventure.

Every aspect of a Sandglass stay is meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of place, from the handcrafted furniture to the locally inspired cuisine. Each detail, whether it’s the artwork adorning the walls or the fragrance of the shower gel, serves to transport guests to the heart of their surroundings, creating a truly immersive experience.

Biophilic, Regenerative and Sustainable design
by Carazo Arquitectura

An innovative approach to architecture and interior design that seeks to incorporate elements of nature into the built environment. Biophilic design aims to harness this connection to create spaces that enhance well-being, productivity, and overall quality of life. It seeks to create environments that nurture the human-nature connection.

Natural light and ventilation, impresive views to nature, natural materials, water features and an overall design that uses biomorphic forms. Organic shapes and patterns inspired by the natural world in design elements such as furniture, textiles, and artwork, can evoke a sense of harmony and relaxation.

It allows a perfect integration with the surrounding environment. Spaces in harmony with the natural landscape, climate, and local ecology, help minimise environmental impact and creates a stronger connection to the place.

A regenerative project that gives back to nature requires a holistic approach that considers both the immediate locale and the broader ecosystem.

It is designed to coexist harmoniously with its natural surroundings while actively contributing to their regeneration. Located in a diverse ecological zone, such as a forest or coastal area, the project will stand as a testament to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

Its as a beacon of hope and innovation, demonstrating how architecture can not only minimize its impact on the environment but also actively contribute to its regeneration and renewal.

Sustainable practices are an expectation, and a given in luxury hospitality today. We have a defined strategy we employ in the development and operation of Sandglass Hotels & Villas Collection.

The project will be fully built with mass timber as building material, reducing CO2 emissions 5 times more than if we used concrete and 8 times more than steel. Timber, a natural resource, is 100% recycled and reinforces the sense of biophilia and connection with nature.

Sandglass is for explorers who want to live on the leading edge of travel. For those explorers who want authentic, local experiences; who want to feel like they’ve been somewhere special, to experience something they never even knew existed.
